Following Jesus In a Facebook World
Each year there are new trends that impact who we are and how we live. From what's fashionable to the kind of food we eat to what we do for fun, cultural and societal trends change us and shape us year after year and decade after decade!
There are even bigger trends that are longer lasting and that impact us in more significant ways. For example, in December 2003 the average price of gas was $1.49 per gallon. What about today? In the 1950's the average price for a cup of coffee was 10 cents! In 2011 the average cost of a cup of coffee was $1.38. Have you been to Starbucks lately? The average lifespan of a person born in 1980 is 70 years, but the average lifespan of a person born in 2010 is 81!
What about church? How do trends in our society and culture impact our church? How do they impact us as believers? How do we follow Jesus faithfully and share the message of Christ with others in a world that is becoming more and more secularized and pluralistic?
Dr. Westbrook will offer a series on Wednesday nights (6-7pm) beginning in January entitled Following Jesus in a Facebook World. The goal of this series is to create opportunities for meaningful dialogue across generations within our church family about what it means to be and do church in the 21st century. This is a church-wide opportunity and adults of all ages are encouraged to participate!

Formation of Worship Strategy Team
In October, the Leadership Team announced that FHBC would offer a single worship service beginning Oct. 13. During this time, a re-visioning process for the Contemporary Service would be undertaken with a target date of February 1st as a date by which to return with a plan or to restart the Contemporary Service. Dr. Westbrook has met with several church lay leaders over the last month and it has become evident that there is a need for a complete evaluation of all worship at FHBC.
Therefore, a Worship Strategy Team (WST) has been formed to evaluate and develop a comprehensive worship strategy for FHBC. The WST is currently meeting and has been charged with presenting its recommendations to the Seek Council and Diaconate by March 15, 2014. The WST will provide regular updates on their progress and work with the staff to setup several opportunities for education about worship, congregational input and discussion. In the interim, FHBC will offer a contemporary service in place of the traditional service at 11:00 am one Sunday each month.
Worship Strategy Team Members:
Julie Boyles, Stephen Edwards, Elizabeth Murray, Frances Overby, Henry Su, Donnie Wiltshire, Neil Westbrook, Senior Pastor, Joy Phillips, Seek Council Chair. Please keep these team members and their work in your prayers as they seek God's guidance for worship at FHBC.
Inclement Weather Policy
In the event of inclement weather, Forest Hills Baptist Church follows Wake County Public Schools policy. Please check WRAL, Facebook, and E-Mail for updates and announcements regarding
delays or closings.
Homebound Ministry Opportunity
At FHBC we have many HOMEBOUND members who have attended church all of their lives, but now find attending difficult and sometimes impossible, due to changing circumstances of age and health.
There are a number of ways to help these members feel connected: Ongoing Ministry: phone calls, visits and cards On-Occasion Ministry: Valentine cookie and poinsettia delivery and communion.
If you are willing to help minister to these faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, please contact one of the deacon leaders for the Homebound Ministry Care Team: Hamlin Landis (email@example.com) & Judy Skaggs (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Upcoming Parent/Child Dedication
We are tentatively planning to have a parent-child dedication on the morning of Sunday, February 23rd. If you would like your family to be recognized during the service, please contact Dr. Westbrook (email@example.com).

LLIT Efforts To Date
The Lay Leadership Implementation Team (LLIT) met on three occasions in December to begin the process of developing a plan to implement the new organizational structure recommended by the IST and approved in early November by the church membership in conference vote. In its latest meeting, the LLIT began to consider an overall framework for the model, which will lay the groundwork for further discussions in the coming weeks about the details that will need to be considered in implementing the new model.
The LLIT also ran through an exercise in the most recent meeting to identify key words that will reflect the new organizational model, enabling the church as a whole to better serve God in future years of ministry. Members of the LLIT suggested the following words as a start:
(ADMINISTRATIVE) Governance, process, function, efficient, nimble, streamlined, energizing, dynamic, scalable, accountable, trust building, supporting change, consistent, consensus building, straight-forward, bold, transparent, clear
(SPIRITUAL) Seeking, discerning God's Will, maximizes ministry, minimizes leadership [number of positions required], agile, vibrant, engaging, encouraging, catalyst, activation
What words would you add to reflect how the new organizational structure should be characterized once implemented?
Please feel free to make suggestions to the LLIT. Please also know the LLIT is committed to discerning God's will in this implementation plan, asking you to be in prayer along with us in the coming weeks as plans are developed.
The LLIT will continue to provide updates as implementation plans come into focus.

The New Year is full of hope and expectation, especially for two men who attended the New Year's Eve Celebration with the International Ministry earlier this week. These two men had arrived in the U.S.A. only 10 days earlier! The December 31, 2013 celebration at Forest Hills was their first introduction to the Church, local and globally! They are both visiting Plant Biology Scholars from south west China, and they were delighted to be welcomed so warmly. One of the men said he was already looking forward to coming back to church on Sunday morning to practice English with native speakers in the ESL Bible classes! Praise the Lord!
Have you ever wanted to serve the Lord with the gifts, talents and abilities He has afforded you? Speaking with trusted native English speakers is a strong desire for so many international people in the US. As a native English speaker, you have a gift to share. Come learn how to share Jesus through practicing English with new friends from around the World! Please RSVP to Jason today in order to reserve your spot in the Workshop!
